This work illustrates the gradual disintegration of a generative constellation pattern inspired by the geometric motifs of Islamic art. It was designed using a framework developed in collaboration with Craig S. Kaplan. The framework introduces a graphical encoding of constellation patterns and an automatic decoding scheme that leverages circle packings as geometric scaffolds. This abstraction facilitates the recreation of classical patterns, the design of novel patterns, and the exploration of re-imagined forms like this one that blend order with chaos to unlock new modes of expression. Its random fragmentation, intricately woven into its organic structure, represents the disintegration of the mind as it begins to unravel.
Disintegrating was selected for the Mathematical Art Exhibition at the 2025 Joint Mathematics Meetings and received Honorable Mention.
The engravings were made using a Universal 120W Laser Cutter.
